Kane Ancient City is a ruin located in the Dikili district of Izmir and belongs to the ancient Aiolian civilization. The city is located in the Babakale area, on the northern shore of Çandarlı Bay. The history of Kane dates back to the 10th century BC and has been home to many civilizations such as the Aeolians, Persians, Romans and Byzantines.
History:
Kane was first founded by the Aeolians in the 10th century BC. The city was an important trade center at that time and traded with other Aeolian cities in the Aegean Sea. Conquered by the Persians in the 6th century BC, Kane became part of the Persian Empire. Conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 BC, the city became part of the Macedonian Empire. After Alexander’s death, the city passed to the Kingdom of Pergamon and then to the Roman Empire.
During the Roman period, the city was called “Cius” and became an important port city. Many temples, theatres, agoras and baths were built in the city. The city, which maintained its importance during the Byzantine period, was captured by the Turks in the 13th century.

The first archaeological excavations in the Ancient City of Kane were carried out by German archaeologists in the 19th century. During the excavations, many important structures such as the city’s walls, temples, agora, theatre, baths and necropolis were unearthed.
